Care Worker Take-Home Pay Calculator (2026/27)

Care work has pay quirks a generic take-home calculator misses entirely: sleep-in shifts that legally don’t need to pay full minimum wage while you’re asleep, travel time between client visits that legally does count toward the minimum wage, and mileage relief on a rate that just jumped for the first time in over a decade. This calculator builds your real gross pay from all of that, checks it against the National Living/Minimum Wage, and runs it through the same Income Tax and National Insurance engines as our National Insurance Calculator for genuine take-home pay.

Sleep-In Shifts: What the Law Actually Says

In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled in Royal Mencap Society v Tomlinson-Blake that care workers on sleep-in shifts are not entitled to the minimum wage for the hours they’re asleep — only for time spent awake and actually working. In practice, most employers pay a flat fee for the sleep-in itself (which can legally sit below what an hourly minimum-wage rate for the whole shift would suggest), plus your normal hourly rate for any time you’re called on to help. This calculator keeps those two separate: the flat fee is added to your pay but never tested against the minimum wage, while awake hours are tested exactly like ordinary hours.

Travel Time Between Visits Counts — Commuting Doesn’t

If your job involves visiting several clients in a day, the time you spend travelling between those visits counts as working time for minimum wage purposes — your employer has to make sure your average pay across the day (visits plus travel) doesn’t fall below the minimum wage. What doesn’t count: travelling from home to your first visit, and from your last visit back home — that’s ordinary commuting either way. Pay is checked as an average: total qualifying pay for the week divided by total qualifying hours, not a requirement that every single hour individually clears the rate.

A Common Trap: Paying for Travel Time Doesn’t Fix a Rate That’s Already Too Low

Here’s something worth understanding clearly: if your base hourly rate is below the minimum wage, being paid the same hourly rate for your travel time doesn’t rescue the average — both your pay and your hours go up together, so the ratio between them stays exactly the same. Take someone on £11.50/hour with 30 contracted hours and 5 hours of travel a week: paid or unpaid, the average works out to £11.50/hour either way, still £1.21 short of the £12.71 National Living Wage. What actually fixes it is either raising the base hourly rate itself, or the travel time being paid at a genuinely higher effective rate than the contracted hours. Being paid for travel time is a separate legal requirement from being paid enough for it — this calculator checks both, but they’re not the same fix for the same problem.

The Mileage Rate Just Rose — For the First Time Since 2011

HMRC’s Approved Mileage Allowance Payment for a car rose from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year (25p after that), effective 6 April 2026 — the first change in over thirteen years. If you drive your own car between client visits and your employer pays you less than this per mile (many care providers pay 20p–35p), you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the shortfall directly from HMRC. This calculator works it out automatically: enter your annual business miles and what your employer actually pays you per mile, and it shows the relief and exactly how much it’s worth once your Income Tax rate is applied.

Worked Example

A care worker on £12.71/hour, 37.5 contracted hours/week, driving 8,000 business miles a year and reimbursed just 25p/mile by their employer: gross pay before mileage is £24,784.76/year. HMRC’s approved amount for 8,000 miles is £4,400.00 (all within the 55p tier); the employer only paid £2,000.00, leaving a **£2,400.00** shortfall claimable as Mileage Allowance Relief. At this worker’s 20% basic rate, that relief is worth **£480.00** in reduced Income Tax — money most care workers paying their own petrol never think to claim back.

Who Should Use This Calculator?

Home care, domiciliary care, and residential care workers who want to check their real take-home pay and whether their hourly rate — once travel time and sleep-ins are properly accounted for — actually clears the minimum wage. It doesn’t verify that a specific employer’s real rota is legally compliant (only HMRC’s National Minimum Wage enforcement team can do that), doesn’t model rolled-up holiday pay for zero-hours contracts, umbrella-company deductions, or Statutory Sick/Maternity Pay, and assumes a standard employee National Insurance category.

It’s also a useful sense check before raising a pay concern with an employer or with ACAS — being able to show the actual average hourly rate, worked out the same way GOV.UK’s own guidance describes it, is a stronger starting point than a general feeling that a payslip “doesn’t look right.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I get paid for sleep-in shifts at the full minimum wage?

No — only for hours you’re awake and working, following the 2021 Mencap Supreme Court ruling. Asleep time is usually a separate flat fee.

Does travel time between home care visits count toward the minimum wage?

Yes, travel between client visits counts. Ordinary commuting from home to your first visit and back doesn’t.

What is the mileage rate for care workers using their own car in 2026/27?

55p/mile for the first 10,000 business miles, 25p after — up from 45p. Claim Mileage Allowance Relief if your employer pays less.

How do I know if my care job pays at least the minimum wage?

Divide total qualifying weekly pay (hourly earnings, paid travel, awake sleep-in hours) by total qualifying hours — compare to your age band’s rate.

If my employer pays me for travel time, does that fix a low hourly rate?

Not on its own. If travel time is paid at the same rate as your contracted hours, the average stays the same either way. What matters is whether the rate itself — including travel — clears the minimum wage, not just whether travel time is paid at all.

This calculator provides an estimate based on the rules stated above. It checks the arithmetic of the figures you enter against the National Minimum Wage and tax rules — it cannot verify that a specific employer’s actual rota or contract is legally compliant. It does not model rolled-up holiday pay, umbrella-company deductions, Statutory Sick/Maternity Pay, or non-standard National Insurance categories. Check GOV.UK, ACAS, or a qualified adviser if you believe your pay may not be compliant.
