Australia Invoice Generator
The ATO sets out exactly what a valid tax invoice must contain, and the list grows once a sale reaches $1,000. This tool tracks every required field and flags what’s missing, computes GST the same way as this site’s GST calculator — 10% standard, or 0% for GST-free/input-taxed line items — and gives you a PDF ready to send.
The Fields a Tax Invoice Needs
For any taxable sale under $1,000, a tax invoice needs seven things clearly determinable: that it’s intended to be a tax invoice, your identity, your ABN, the date it was issued, a description of what was sold (with quantity and price), the GST amount payable, and which parts of the sale are taxable.
Once the sale reaches $1,000 or more, an eighth field kicks in: you also need the buyer’s identity or ABN. This tool watches your grand total and adds that requirement to the compliance banner automatically the moment you cross the threshold — you don’t have to remember to check.
You Don’t Always Need One
A tax invoice is only required if your customer asks for it, and only for sales over $82.50 (including GST) — below that, you don’t have to provide one at all. Once asked, you have up to 28 days to issue it. None of that means you shouldn’t issue one anyway for your own records, but it’s worth knowing you’re not legally on the hook for every $20 sale.
Leaving Off Your ABN Can Cost Your Client 47%
If you don’t provide your ABN and the payment is more than $75 (excluding GST), your client is generally required to withhold 47% of the payment and remit it to the ATO instead of paying you the full amount — the same top-rate figure used elsewhere in tax law as a blunt incentive to supply an identifier (it’s identical to the flat rate an employer must withhold from an employee who hasn’t provided a TFN). This tool watches your ABN field and the invoice subtotal, and shows a warning automatically if you’re about to send an invoice that could trigger this — a heads-up, not a legal determination, since genuine exceptions exist (private sales, hobby suppliers, amounts of $75 or less).
GST-Free and Input-Taxed Lines
Both show $0 GST on the invoice, but they’re not the same thing for you as the seller — see the GST calculator’s explanation of the distinction if you’re not sure which applies to a given line item.
Frequently Asked Questions
What fields must an Australian tax invoice include?
Under $1,000: tax invoice statement, seller identity + ABN, date issued, item description, GST amount, taxable-sale extent. $1,000+: also the buyer’s identity or ABN.
Do I need to issue a tax invoice for every sale?
Only if asked, and only for sales over $82.50 including GST — you then have up to 28 days to provide it.
What happens if I don’t put my ABN on an invoice?
For payments over $75 (excluding GST), your client is generally required to withhold 47% instead of paying you in full.
Is my invoice data saved anywhere?
Business details are saved in this browser only. Line items and client details per invoice are not saved — export before starting a new one.
This tool does not verify your ABN against the Australian Business Register, and does not submit anything to the ATO. Confirm your invoice meets your specific obligations with a registered tax or BAS agent.
